Our first official ‘Meet The Brewer’ event takes place at the end of this month. Summer Wine Brewery will be holding an informative yet informal chat and you’ll have the first opportunity to sample some of their wonderful beers, including : Valencia (pale ale) Rouge Hop, Teleporter (10 Malt Porter), Lime & Coriander Saison (first of four Saisons) Port Street will be the first bar in the country to serve this!
So join us for a intimate event of amazing beer and friendly people.

The driving forces behind the brewery are Andy Baker (Managing Director) & James Farran (Head Brewer). Andy is a Newcastle University Environmental Science graduate & James a brewing & science nut who has been honing his skills for 9 years. They are both hop heads & malt mad, blending the worlds best ingredients to create the finest quality cask & bottled ales.
SWB strive to be unique in everything they do, pride themselves on high quality wares at very competitive prices & believe their customer service rivals any. They believe creativity is a gift that should be explored, this means tradition isn’t always right & that things evolve including beer… SWB are in it for the long haul & plan some unusual stops along the way…

The start of Port Street Beer House’s American Beer Festival starting Mon 27th June, until the beer runs out, is clearly an ideal time to review Torpedo, an IPA from one of America’s most respected craft beer pioneers Sierra Nevada. On the second day of this wonderful festival, our favourite craft beer venue is buzzing with talk, tastings and trialling of an array of beers that would put any respectable beer sampling adventure at DEFCON 1. – American Beer Festival / Update
It’s our first proper beer festival here at Port Street and what better way to start than celebrating the most creative craft brewing scene in the world. We launched the American Beer Festival on Monday 27th June with an intimate ticketed event. Around 60 of you came to sample the beer and helped turn the night into a celebration of all things American. We put on a few snacks, the cornbread in particular had mixed reactions, but overall went down a treat. (more…)

To be brutally honest, no-one really knows. There are all sorts of articles and postings on the internet where people claim to know the definition of what a craft brewer is. It’s easy enough to define what an American Craft Brewer is, because they have an association and a definition: Small, Independent and Traditional. But for them small is less than 6 million barrels of beer a year. That’s a whopping 1.7 billion pints. Not sound so whopping? Here’s a bit of maths; in the UK each day 28 million pints of beer are consumed, which equates to 1.02 billion pints a year. And by beer, that’s all beer including lager and even stuff like Tennents Super and Special Brew. (more…)
